“My name is Mae. What’s your name?” Mae greeted by a stranger in the park the other day with this well practiced line that she uses mostly at the grocery store. The women looked down at her and said, “Hi, I’m Brooke. Are you sure you should be talking to strangers?”
Brooke looked up at us, Curtis and I were right there with Mae, and we laughed. It was a cute question, and a concept we have never talked to Mae about.
Actually come to think of it, all three of our kids are very confident speaking with adults. We have always spoken to our kids like their little adults, assuming that they comprehend a lot more then adults usually give kids credit for.
It didn’t surprise me that Mae stopped and said hello to Brooke (a stranger) at the park! Mae kept walking with Curtis. We were at a large park with a fenced off dog park. They walked over to watch the dogs but I had stopped and talked to Brooke for a bit.
I had my low end Cannon camera hanging off of my shoulder. She had seen me taking pictures of Mae in the park and asked if I was a photographer. I answered,
“No, not even close. I think I spent $350 bucks on this refurbished camera. I just like playing with the light on a real [DSLR] camera. It creates so much more dimension in the photo.”
I also think that Mae is a pretty cute subject!
Brooke told me that she had done some modeling, so she had been on the other end. She had been like Mae, the subject that the camera lens was capturing. Just that weekend she was pondering if she should pick up modeling again. She explained that she had taken a break from it.
I asked her if there was even a market for it in Salt Lake City. (I couldn’t imagine that she could make much money modeling in Utah.) She said that she’s a plus size model and that she usually flies to LA or New York to model. And then she said something interesting. She said,
“I don’t know if you believe in God, but seeing you shooting pictures of your daughter was a sign to me that I need to go back to modeling. I’ve been thinking about it, so thank you.”
My mothering has been so hands on for me, that usually I don’t even grab my camera. It gets left behind at home. I love photography as a form of creativity, but my needs are often forgotten.
I asked Brooke about her dog, who was obviously aging. The dog was moving slowly and I spotted graying hair throughout its face. As I was talking with Brooke I mentioned some of the difficulties of parenting, and how I have pushed some of my creative effort aside. She said, I’m only a dog mom, but I could only imagine. Then she asked me what I would like to be doing with the pictures I was taking.
I replied, “I would like to be blogging with them.”.
Then she stopped to correct me, and said, “You are blogging”.
I smiled and repeated, “I’m a blogger! I actually have a beautiful blog!! But it seems like I have been forced into a life where I am cleaning up poop and pee and it is taking all of my time and energy to clean it up.” (I wish I was kidding about this.)
And then she said in a way to challenge me,
“Then write about it.
Take this as a sign from me to you, that I’m hear reminding you that you are supposed to take pictures and write and keep moving forward with the things that bring life to you.”
Earlier that week I had recieved a tag on the end of my tea string that said, “The world needs your unique gifts”.
Brooke seemed to be echoing what I was already feeling.
This was a beautiful synchronicity that I needed in my life. A confirming experience to push me to actually pick up my computer and write this blog post!
I will echo here, The world needs you! It needs the unique you!
